How Do Dogs Smell Cancerous Cells?

When dogs first started detecting cancer in patients, there were a lot of critics who criticized the practice and questioned how did dogs detect cancer faster then any other test? Most people thought it was some sort of joke and others called it a publicity stunt to popularize dogs in the medical field. But the truth is that dogs can actually smell in one part per trillion.

Which means, that if there was a drop of blood in an Olympic size swimming pool, a dog could easily detect it in a matter of seconds. Where as, it would require humans a series of tests to verify that there is actually a drop of blood in the pool and there would be no way to pin point the exact location. As a matter of fact, dogs can smell so well that they can identify and pinpoint cancer in when it is in the situ in its formation stage (stage 1). 

Why Do Dogs Detect Cancer?

Over the years, there have been many questions raised on dogs ability to detect cancer and why do they detect cancer? Even though there has been many studies and research to prove dogs ability to detect cancer, no one really knows why do dogs detect cancer in the first place. And the answer is quite simple in reality. Even since man started domesticate wolves, an intricate relationship has been formed between man and dog where man provides dogs with food and shelter, and dogs in return provides man with loyalty, companionship and protection. But to really understand why do dogs detect cancer, you need to look a little closer to home.

If you look closely you will notice that whenever you are active, your dog is active and whenever you are feeling down on your health, your down is as well. As a matter of fact, your dog starts to show signs of restlessness and depression long before you fall sick, because they can sense early when you are about to get sick. Perhaps this is the reason why dogs started detecting cancer in humans in the first place, because they were just returning the age old favor that their master had given them and looking out for their well being.

In the past couple of decades, there has been a lot of research and studies to help determine how to dogs detect cancer and pinpoint its location. Although scientists have not been able to determine how and why do dogs detect cancer, the fact remains that over the years, knowing that dogs can really sniff out cancerous cells and tumors faster then any other tests has helped save countless lives and will continue to save many more in the future.
